Seed Yield Estimation

The seed yield estimation program is designed to aid managers in estimating seed production in moist-soil impoundments.  The program contains regression equations for estimating production of 13 common moist-soil plants.  Users of this program should read the accompanying chapter in the Waterfowl Management Handbook (Fish and Wildlife Leaflet 13: 13.4.5 - A Technique for Estimating Seed Production of Common Moist-soil Plants) before using the program, because it explains the theory behind the seed estimation technique, outlines correct sampling procedures, and provides an example on how to calculate estimates.

Although the mathematics associated with the technique are straightforward, they tend to be cumbersome if multiple calculations must be performed.  This program enables managers to arrive at estimates quickly and with less chance of error.  Program output includes the percent occurrence, average seed yield (lb/ac and LB/unit), and the standard deviation (SD) of estimates (a minimum of three samples must be collected) for individual plant species.  An estimate of total seed production in an impoundment also is computed.  Program utilities enable individual samples to be edited or deleted if data entry mistakes occur.  Immediately after editing, the estimates are automatically recalculated.
