Research Task: 8327CM8.5.0
Task Manager: Sharon Campbell

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has implemented a rotating schedule to monitor the Nation's waters (“Survey of the Nation's Lakes”). The purpose of the survey is to provide a regional and national summary of lake conditions to Congress and to the public. The national lake survey will occur every 5 years, with different lakes sampled each year. The EPA randomly selected the 1,000 lakes and reservoirs to be sampled throughout the lower 48 states. Thirty of these lakes are in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has contracted with the USGS Water Resources Discipline (WRD), Colorado District, to perform lake sampling in the State. At their request, FORT scientists are collaborating with WRD staff in sampling lakes in northern Colorado throughout the summer of 2007. Staff from the Salt Lake City office of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation are also cooperating in these studies.
