Species Lists

Species lists are compiled for each sub-region based on information and range predictions published in the following field guides:

Hammerson, G. 1999. Amphibians and reptiles in Colorado. University Press of Colorado, Boulder and Colorado Division of Wildlife, 2nd Edition.

Hoberg, T. and C. Gause. 1992. Reptiles and amphibians of North Dakota; North Dakota Outdoors. 1995. 55(1):7-19.

The taxonomic classification for amphibians is

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Amphibia

Salamanders are in the Order Urodela and anurans (frogs and toads) are in the Order Anura. Family, Genus, and Species names are listed below for each animal.

The scientific name of 3 species in the Rocky Mountain Region is subject to debate. The Plains spadefoot is recognized as either Spea bombifrons or Scaphiopus bombifrons. The Pacific treefrog is recognized as either Pseudacris regilla or Hyla regilla and some scientists do not recognize full species status for the boreal chorus frog (Pseudacris maculata), instead considering it a subspecies of the western chorus frog (Pseudacris triseriata).
